Waterspouts are spinning columns of air that suck up water, forming a twisting funnel of water and cloud that connects the sea and the sky. They’re quite common off our coast and, although spectacular, are short-lived, with winds topping 100km/h – powerful enough to damage boats and cause havoc if they drift ashore.
