After months of upheaval including the firing of its top boss and laying off hundreds of employees, CarMax looked outside the auto industry for the leader of its next phase.

Goochland-based CarMax announced Thursday that Keith Barr will serve as the used car company's next president and CEO. Barr most recently led InterContinental Hotels Group, also known as IHG.
